Memory

By Benjamin Aleshire

At dinner

making conversation

with my father,

a dog-lover of eighty years –

I mention my friends staying in Berlin.

They wrote to me

Saying the dogs roam freely

& do not need leashes.

Is this true?

I don’t know, he says.

When I was in Berlin

the city looked like the surface of the moon

& all the dogs had been

eaten.
