PoemCity 2014 Call for Submissions

MONTPELIER, VT — The Kellogg Hubbard Library and Montpelier Alive are putting out a call for poetry submissions for PoemCity 2014. Submissions will be accepted from October 7th through December 31st. Selected poems will be displayed in shop windows throughout downtown Montpelier during the month of April. In addition to the text display, PoemCity features poetry/art installations, poetry-related workshops, and readings. Last year, the PoemCity calendar included 30 events.

PoemCity, now in its fifth year, was recently recognized by the Vermont Downtown Program as the “Best Special Event” of 2013. Last year’s program featured an evening with Ellen Bryant Voigt, an exhibit of broadsides from New England presses, and a performance of poetry set to music. PoemCity 2014 is shaping up to be another winning event. “We’re so happy to be able to bring PoemCity to downtown Montpelier again,” said Phayvanh Luekhamhan, Executive Director of Montpelier Alive, the downtown organization. “We strive to bring quality cultural offerings to Montpelier and help visitors to discover our historic district and unique marketplace.”

PoemCity is gaining popularity among poets and poetry lovers. Phayvanh Luekhamhan, Executive Director for Montpelier Alive, points to the growing number of poetry submissions as evidence of Poem City’s success. “Since the first PoemCity in 2010, the number of submissions has grown exponentially. Last year, more than 200 Vermonters submitted poems. We expect the number to keep growing.” Poetry submissions are not limited to professional or published poets. In fact, most poems come from everyday people who are looking for a forum to share their work. “PoemCity’s philosophy is that everyone is a poet. We work to offer opportunities for our community’s poets to publish, disseminate, learn and love poetry,” said Rachel Senechal, Program and Development Coordinator at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Poetry submissions are open to Vermonters of all ages. PoemCity 2014 is a joint presentation of Kellogg-Hubbard Library and Montpelier Alive
